Under general supervision of the Public Works Director, performs work relating to the development, coordination and administration of the City’s Stormwater Utility, flood operations, stormwater management, stormwater capital improvements, NPDES program and Walnut Creek Watershed Plan. Performs a variety of routine and complex technical engineering work to ensure public and private infrastructure is analyzed, designed, constructed, inspected and managed in accordance with City Codes, policies and regulations. Works with other departments and co-workers to accomplish various assignments and activities. Performs other duties as required.


Examples of Essential Job Functions

  • Coordinates the development of the Capital Improvements Program for stormwater related improvements and provides project management for stormwater capital projects, including but not limited to the development of plans and estimates, bidding process and construction.
  • Oversees the stormwater related construction inspection process and personnel for all public and private infrastructure improvements to ensure that construction is in accordance with all plans, specifications and permits.
  • Designs and manages streambank stabilization and other similar projects and works with public works and parks operations staff to complete the projects in house with City equipment. This process includes acquiring the necessary materials to complete the work.
  • Manages stormwater related professional service agreements with City's engineering related consultants and administers stormwater related pay application requests.
  • Reviews and approves stormwater management designs, plans and specifications for public, private commercial and residential development projects.
  • Prepares SWPPPs and any applicable environmental permits for public projects such as general permit #@ and 404/401 permits.
  • Completes stormwater management plans and including BMP design and hydrologic and hydraulic calculations utilizing software such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, XPSWMM, and others.
  • Prepares stormwater related engineering reports and memorandums.

The qualified Traffic Engineer will lead traffic impact studies, intersection control studies, multimodal integration studies, and research studies. Most of this work will be with our 75 municipal client base. You will also have the opportunity to work with project managers to lead elements of traffic design including traffic signal and roadway lighting plans, signing and striping plans, staging and traffic control plans, and will provide geometric design guidance from a traffic perspective.


Essential Functions:

  • Lead traffic studies including data collection, analysis, findings and recommendations. Present findings to clients, elected officials, and public stakeholders
  • Provide support to transportation and municipal project managers in transportation related design, traffic signal and roadway lighting plans, signing and striping plans, staging and traffic control plans
  • Develops, coordinates and completes the final design and the preparation of plans, specifications and estimates associated with traffic design work
  • Coordinates the construction administration of signal and traffic management projects
  • Plans and organizes technical project work assignments
  • Directs & supervises the work of other engineers and technicians
  • Assists with the training and development of professional and technical staff
  • Establishes specialty area of expertise in traffic engineering design
  • Travels periodically to work site and other project related locations
  • Education and Experience:
  • B.S. Degree in Engineering from an accredited college
  • Currently registered as Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Iowa or able to obtain within six (6) months
  • Generally requires six (6) years of progressive experience or Master’s Degree plus five (5) years of progressive experience
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (P.T.O.E.) preferred, not required
  • Thorough knowledge in related software (i.e. Microstation, SignCAD, MS Excel and Word)
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Possess valid driver's license and is insurable at firm's standard rates

Senior Engineer (PE) - Urbandale, IA

Type: Full Time

Salary/Pay Rate: $84,016.00 - $95,166.00 Annually

The City of Urbandale is accepting applications for a Senior Engineer (PE). 


Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Engineering, assists with project design, review, and inspections relating to the City’s infrastructure. The Senior Engineer position provides in- house design of Capital Improvement Projects as well as management and review of consultant design. This position collaborates with technicians and geographical information systems (GIS) staff to oversee and maintain the asset management database of the City’s infrastructure. This position reviews development projects (including preliminary plats, final plats, storm water management, construction drawings, site plans, legal descriptions/easement documents, as-built surveys, etc.) in accordance with state laws and engineering standards. The Senior Engineer position assists with administration of construction contracts and field review of on-going construction projects.


The Routine Job Duties listed below are comprised of the tasks assigned to the team of Senior Engineers to design, review, and complete infrastructure projects for the City of Urbandale. Duties are divided amongst the Engineering team members and may be shifted from year to year depending on the workload from both private development and capital improvement projects. The ideal candidate is someone who is eager to work on a wide variety of projects and enjoys applying engineering principles to serve the public. The Engineering team strives to provide reliable infrastructure to City residents for years to come, including minimizing risk to the public, providing for future growth, and managing public resources responsibly. The ideal candidate will be ready to both work independently and collaborate with coworkers on projects and tasks.
